A Guide to Wall-mounted Electric Fireplaces

For those who prefer minimalistic elements and a modern flair, wall-mounted electric fireplaces are the product for you. Linear fireplaces are becoming a hot trend and will continue to be a piece of decor that you will see in people’s homes around the world.

Wall-mounted fireplaces come in a wide variety of options, styles and designs. They are great for condo, additions, or rentals.

How to Determine the Perfect Wall-mounted Fireplace for Your Space

Wall-mounted electric fireplaces are an increasingly popular option, especially for those people who love the linear, built-in look. This type of fireplace gives you a modern feel, without taking up any floor space.

If you are considering a wall-mounted fireplace for your home or condo, there are several decisions you will need to make before selecting the right fireplace for your space.

Here are some questions you should ask yourself:

  1. Do you want to cut into the wall? If you do, how much depth will you have for the fireplace?
  2. Do you want to build the wall out to accommodate the fireplace? If you do, how far into the room do you want to build?
  3. Do you want to mount the fireplace on the surface of the wall?
  4. Do you want to have a TV above the fireplace?
  5. Do you need or want heat from the fireplace?

If you plan to cut into the wall or build out a wall to accommodate your fireplace, it’s best to find out how deep your preferred fireplace is. Depths range from 4” to 9” for contemporary models and up to 17” for traditional models that can go into a wall or cabinet. If you are limited in the depth that you can achieve in your wall, then it’s best to know that before you go shopping.

Advantages of a Wall Mount and Its Top Features.

There are many linear and built-in electric fireplaces that mount on the surface of the wall. While many people assume that these can also be inset into a wall, this is usually not the case. Most units are designed to be either in the wall or on the wall, not both.

Surface-mounted fireplaces will generally project 4” to 6.5” into the room. The advantage of surface-mounting is that these units may be removed from the wall when you move, or repositioned to another spot in the home, without leaving a gaping hole in the wall. This is an important factor for people who rent. There is a stigma around renting and how you shouldn't invest in a space that you don’t own. By adding a Surface-mounted fireplace, you can simply take it to your new location, and move the value of your investment with you.

Surface-mounted fireplaces are also great for condo living. All, if not most of your walls in your builder-grade condo will not allocate enough space for a full built-in fireplace. That’s okay. Now you can get the same look and feel,

It’s also much simpler to install a fireplace on the surface of the wall rather than having to cut through studs and reinforce the wall cavity in order to mount in the wall.  In the world of DIY, this is a product that will get you excited! Whether you are a veteran DIYer or just getting started, this is a product that you can add to your home without a sweat.

If you prefer a fireplace that offers heat, you will have to consider where the heat is blown out of the unit. A fireplace that’s designed to go into a wall or cabinet, will expel the heat out of a vent in the front of the unit. A fireplace that’s designed for surface mounting will expel heat out the top or the bottom of the unit.

If you wish to have a TV above your surface-mounted fireplace, then you need to ensure that heat is blown out the bottom of the fireplace, and not the top. Our Dimplex Winslow Wall-mount/Tabletop Linear Fireplace has rising features from the bottom of the unit allowing for safe installation of electronics above the fireplace.
